Visiting Amsterdam, The Capital City Of The Netherlands

Most of the time when I think about the Netherlands or Holland, the first thoughts that come to mind are…. the endless tulip fields, intragyral canal system and, the notorious red-light district of Amsterdam.  I knew immediately when I found out I was headed to Germany, that I wanted to see all the thousands of tulips. Which meant, I needed to plan a trip in early spring when the tulips were in full bloom! But… you can’t go to the Netherlands without stopping in Amsterdam!

I made my travel plans and slipped away for a short, but truly colorful weekend. I was able to get off work early on a Friday afternoon and drove 6 hours straight from Ansbach, Germany to Amsterdam. I was staying in a little campsite, Camping Zeeburg Amsterdam, which was right off of one of the canals. I stayed in a little built up rental space. It was like a trailer but set up very nicely with bunk beds, a little table and some windows. The camp had group showers and bathrooms and parking, so it worked out just right.

I spent Saturday exploring the city with what seemed to be endless bike and walking paths! It is no wonder why the Netherlands is known as the “Bicycle Capital of the World”!

I was able to spend some time in the Vindhek Vondekpark and a quick trip to the The Willet-Holthuysen Museum!

Just like most major cities, you can’t help but enjoy the various street performers and entertainment along the way!

I made sure that I scheduled plenty of time to visit the Anne Frank House. I stood in line for almost two hours to be able to walk through. Without a doubt, it was 100% worth it. The Anne Frank House has been transformed into a museum that allows you to see and better understand what Anne and others endured just trying to survive.

The original diary is on display with the pictures Anne pasted to her bedroom wall as well. There is no photography allowed in the museum itself which allows for everyone to really experience the house while listening to the free audio tour. I highly recommend this to anyone who makes a stop in Amsterdam. You can see more about it at https://www.annefrank.org/en/museum/.

All in all, the trip to Amsterdam was well worth the drive! I was able to walk all over the town and see the different areas and sights. And, I was able to enjoy delicious stroopwafels to my hearts content! Now… off the see the colorful tulips!!!
