One of my favorite things is getting up early and enjoying the stillness of the sunrise. One of the better places to do that is from Oahu’s Makapu’u Point!

The trail itself is only 2 or so miles but you easily take a few hours enjoying the views and the sunshine. It is highly recommended that you wear sunscreen and a hat as it will be very hot, sunny and dry. There are even cactus along the route.
While the actual lighthouse is off limits, the trail offers amazing views of windward cost and even the islands of Moloka’I and Lana’i. The lighthouse was built in 1909 and is well known for its distinguishing red-roof. The trail is apart of the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline and is a great place to watch humpback whales when they migrate between November and May each year. The point also is great place for birdwatching as the “iwa, frigate bird, and the tropicbird are homed in the wildlife sanctuaries.
